choose the right sunglass lenses
When putting together your new sunglasses, you’ll have a few choices to make: what type of lenses do you want, and in what color? That might sound a bit complicated but it’s really not. Of course, you’ll want something that looks good, but it’s also important that your lenses suit your frame and how you plan to use your sunglasses. To make your choice easier, we’ve explained below the differences between the various types and colors of sunglass lenses.

standard sunglass lenses
Our standard sunglass lenses have the same color tint across the entire lens, offering a classic, timeless look. You can choose from grey, green, brown, or dark blue lenses. These lenses are 85% tinted, meaning they absorb 85% of light and let through 15%. They feature a category 3 UV400 filter, providing full protection against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Perfect for sunny days and everyday wear.

light tinted lenses
Looking for a subtler look where your eyes are still visible behind the lenses? Then light-tinted sunglasses are a great choice. They’re available in grey, green, blue, orange, purple, and yellow. These lenses are 60% tinted, meaning they absorb 60% of light and let through 40%. They create a softer look while still offering full eye protection with a category 2 UV400 filter. Perfect for days with changing sunlight or as a stylish, everyday pair of glasses.

mirrored lenses
Want sunglasses with a bit more personality? Then mirrored lenses are real eye-catchers. These lenses feature a reflective coating across the entire surface, so your conversation partner can subtly see their own reflection in your glasses. Besides their striking look, mirrored lenses also provide extra protection against bright light, as the mirror coating reflects part of the sun’s rays.
At Wink & See, mirrored lenses are available in silver, red, green, blue, and pink: currently only for non-prescription lenses. All mirrored lenses come with a category 3 UV400 filter, offering full protection from harmful rays.

polarized lenses
Sunglasses with polarized lenses don’t just protect your eyes from UV rays, they also give your eyes extra comfort and relaxation. These lenses contain a special filter that eliminates harsh glare from sunlight such as reflections on wet asphalt, water, or snowy slopes. It’s exactly those bright reflections that sometimes make you squint. Polarized lenses reduce that glare, giving you calmer, clearer, and higher-contrast vision.
They’re ideal for driving, water sports, and winter sports, and of course, perfect for any sunny day. Available in grey and brown, they offer UV400 protection in category 3.

gradient lenses
Sunglasses with gradient lenses have a darker tint at the top that gradually becomes lighter toward the bottom. The color itself stays the same across the lens, only the intensity changes. This gives your sunglasses a stylish look, while also being highly practical: the darker upper section shields your eyes from bright sunlight above, and the lighter lower part lets you clearly see what’s in front of you, like your dashboard or phone.
You can choose grey, green, brown, blue, or purple gradient lenses. They absorb 85% of light, which means they fall under category 3 UV400 protection.

choose based on how you'll use them
As you’ve read above, there are several types of sunglass lenses to choose from. Which ones suit you best mainly depends on how and where you’ll be wearing your sunglasses. After all, the sun doesn’t only show up when it’s warm. Good eye protection matters just as much during a crisp spring walk, a day on the water, or a winter sports holiday.
So, think about how you’ll be using your sunglasses:
- Often on the road or out on the water? Choose polarized lenses, they reduce glare from sunlight reflecting off wet roads or water.
- Heading to the mountains for winter sports? The sun can be just as bright there, especially with reflections on the snow. Polarized lenses offer extra comfort and clear vision.
- For everyday use? Standard category 3 lenses usually provide the perfect balance between protection and style.
- Going to a festival or looking to match your outfit? Consider light-tinted lenses for a stylish, subtle look.
In short: before choosing your sunglasses, think about when and where you’ll wear them most. Once you know your typical “sun moments,” you’ll naturally pick the lenses that suit you best and enjoy comfortable, clear vision every day.
